About MARC records for dissertations and theses

Universities that actively publish dissertations and theses with UMI Dissertation Publishing are entitled to free MARC records for their submitted graduate works. The records are machine-generated level 7 records and are considered a good starting point for your catalogers. They may also be added to an index/OPAC as is. When requested, a URL may be added to the 856u tag that will link to the bibliographic record within our database.

We offer two electronic formats: US MARC and a format created by ProQuest which we call DCI MARC that is used mostly by vendors or users who are not loading to OPACs and do not require the standard header information. More detailed information and tag description charts may be found here Tag Description Chart. For a sample in the US MARC format click here: for the sample DCI MARC format, click here.

Currently it is necessary to complete a form and submit via email each time you wish to update your records. The request form and instructions may be found here MARC Record Order Form. Send your completed form to disspub@proquest.com
